Planning permission for the first phase of development has been submitted for Mayfield, a mixed-use neighbourhood undergoing a £1.4bn transformation. The plans have been submitted to Manchester City Council by The Mayfield Partnership.
The Mayfield Partnership are proposing 70,000 sq ft of commercial space, with a further planning application expected in Autumn for 12-stories of office space creating 220,000 sq ft of space. The building is to be designed by architects Morris + Company, an architecture firm located in London. The firm’s portfolio is London-centric, so it will be great to see them bring their work up north and transform this unloved area of Manchester City Centre.
Alongside office space, commercial space and 545 parking spaces, The Mayfield Partnership are also creating a park, the first new park that Manchester has seen in over a century. The lack of green space in Manchester City Centre has been a contentious issue for some years, but now this forgotten area of the city is set to encompass a 6.5-acre park on the banks of the River Medlock.
Not only is the project transforming a derelict and neglected part of the city, but it’s also expected to create more than 7,500 office, retail, leisure and construction jobs. It’s rumoured that Barclays Bank are considering Mayfield as their major hub, which has been looking to strengthen its Northern operations for more than 2 years.
If planning permission is obtained for phase one of Mayfield, it is expected that it will be complete in 2022. An open consultation of the proposal is taking place on the 22nd of August at the Fairfield Social Club between 2 pm and 7 pm.
